In some of our major city field tests, firefighters were reporting that their hands
were getting wet even though they had verified the absolute waterproofness of their
firefighters gloves. After much in field study, we determined that in certain hand
positions there could be a break between the waterproof coat sleeve and the waterproof
glove. Liquids could then easily enter through the open gauntlet cuff or the (non-waterproof)
glove gauntlet. Since the glove was, otherwise, waterproof any leakage was retained
in the glove. This new shingle cuff design allows us to provide interface protection
without hand restriction. The "shingle" attaches to the coat with Velcro
(unless ordered permanently sewn on) so the firefighter can adjust depth and rotation
for personal preference. Field tests show it has completely eliminated the glove
water entry problem referenced.
